The United States Foreign Service was created in 1924 to put foreign relations in the hands of non-partisan professionals who are trained in the arts and diplomacy.
Americans got a rare glimpse of the inner workings of that world last fall during the House impeachment inquiry, which heard testimony from State Department employees and the U.S. ambassador to the European Union.
