LGBT Athletes in Sport

The player on the left is Robbie Rodgers, a midfielder for the Los Angeles Galaxy and the only openly gay male athlete playing in one of America's five professional sports leagues.

Kansas State offensive lineman Scott Frantz came out on July 13th. The event grabbed a lot of headlines, but only scratches the surface of LGBT issues in organized major sports. Homophobia partly fueled by heterosexist "locker room talk" is one factor keeping LGBT athletes from coming out. As of now, there is only one openly gay male athlete currently playing for one of America's five major professional sports leagues.
