Ohio State will pay roughly $41 million to sexual abuse survivors who came forward with allegations against a former team doctor.
The deal covers 162 of the plaintiffs suing the university over abuse they suffered at the hands of Dr. Richard Strauss.
The former team doctor worked at the school from 1978-1998, and died by apparent suicide in 2005. An independent investigation found credible evidence that Strauss used his position of authority to prey on young men throughout his tenure.
A special master will be tasked with determining settlement amounts, but split evenly, the fund would pay out slightly more than $250,000 per plaintiff.
The agreement only covers about half of the accusers suing the school. In a press release, university officials say the school is continuing to operate in good faith and “remains committed to a resolution with plaintiffs, including a monetary resolution.”
