Columbus Police Kill Shooting Suspect

Police in Columbus say they confronted and fatally shot a man who was wanted for shooting his girlfriend hours before. It happened early Thursday east of downtown. Sgt. Rich Weiner said the man, 50-year-old Kenneth Ray Herring, was a suspect in a shooting involving a woman on Wednesday night. She was shot twice and hospitalized in critical condition. Weiner said five officers confronted the man at about 12:08 a.m. as he stood on the porch of a house. They were trying to arrest him when all fired shots. None of the officers were hurt. They said the man had a gun, which was recovered at the scene. Other details of the confrontation weren't disclosed. Four people inside the residence were interviewed and later released. The investigation continues.
