Young Adults Smoke Despite Health Warnings

Bowling Green State University researchers say while smoking has dropped among older Ohioans, those under 30 are still puffing away at about the same rate as 25 years ago.

Demographer Heidi Lyons with the university's Center for Family and Demographic Research says young adults have grown up with anti-smoking messages, so you'd hope they wouldn't even take up the habit.

The center analyzed state and federal data to conclude that 28 percent of Ohio young adults, between the ages of 18 and 29, smoked last year. That was down only slightly from the 30 percent who did in 1984.

The report published this month found the smoking rate fell more substantially among Ohio adults 30 and older, from 30 percent a quarter-century ago to 19 percent in 2008.
