Commuters return to outerbelt where 11 vehicles shot

The deer gun season opens today, an event that Franklin County authorities say could lead to more false alarms along a stretch of highway where eleven shootings have been reported.

Police responded by car and helicopter yesterday when shots were fired from a field just south of Interstate 270 in Obetz. Authorities say it was a hunter testing the sight on his rifle.

Authorities have no suspects in the shootings this year along five miles of I-270. Two of the bullets came from the same gun -- including one that killed a woman last week. But investigators haven't been able to link these cases to similar roadway shootings elsewhere.

Sheriff's Chief Deputy Steve Martin says the hunting season could turn up some new leads. He is asking hunters to use their cell phones to report any suspicious activity along the highway.
