The Romero's 50th Anniversary

The Romeros, "The Royal Family of the Guitar," celebrated their 50th anniversary as a performing group this year. Celedonio Romero, who was already a renowned soloist in Spain, founded the quartet with three of his sons, Celin, Pepe, and Angel in the late 1950s after moving to the U.S. in 1957. Their repertoire includes music from the Renaissance to pieces written expressly for them. Perhaps the most illustrious  composer who wrote music for them, Joaquin Rodrigo, said: "The Romeros have developed the technique of the guitar by making what is difficult to be easy. They are, without a doubt, the grand masters of the guitar." That's pretty high praise. We've aired some of their earliest recordings from Mercury (now on CD), to their most recent. The group now encompasses three generations of players; Celedonio passed away in 1996, Celin's son, Celino joined in 1990, and Angel's son, Lito joined in 1996.  In any incarnation, they are always a joy to hear.
