An Evening With Tiffany Poon

It is easy to dismiss young musicians as a product of a good marketing firm, but a real gem arises from time to time that stands up to inspection under a jeweler's loupe. One of those gems is Tiffany Poon, a now 13-year-old pianist who will be in Columbus October 11 with ProMusica Chamber Orchestra. If you have visited YouTube, then you know how many people believe their little Johnny or Susie is the next great performer. One viewing of American Idol, America's Got Talent, or So You Think You Can Dance? shows you that, for every person who really has talent, there are thousands who THINK they do. While I had heard of Tiffany Poon, I have not seen the type of hype usually associated with a "rising star." That may be in her favor, because living up to the hype is nearly impossible. In fact, too much hype can turn many against a performer. The other problem is those who begin to believe our own press clippings. Both can derail a career before it really gets rolling. Take a minute to listen to Tiffany play Chopin, then join ProMusica on the 11th for a real treat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hv2DajKZgv0
