Having showcased artists ranging from Willie Nelson to Sheryl Crow since its premiere in 1976, Austin City Limits champions performers who display exceptional musical and songwriting talents, rather than hemming itself in with music labels. The results are unpretentious and engaging performances by musicians who appreciate the intimate concert setting and straightforward style of production. Austin City Limits presents the best of America's music from country, blues and folk to rock 'n' roll, bluegrass, and zydeco.
Inspired by Austin, Texas' burgeoning live music scene in the early '70s, Austin City Limits has featured more than 500 different regional and internationally acclaimed artists on its stage over the years. From B.B. King and Bob Wills' Texas Playboys to Mary Chapin Carpenter, Ray Charles and Leonard Cohen, each new season presents some of the best original music in every music genre. Its ability to consistently present an amiable mix of musical styles makes it a standout among television music programs. http://www.pbs.org/klru/austin/index.html
Coldplay
England's favorite rock n' roll band is quickly becoming America's favorite as well. Just after receiving three 2006 Grammy nominations Coldplay takes the Austin City Limits stage. The band is joined by special guest Michael Stipe from REM on two songs.
Over the past five years a group of guys from England have been combining heartfelt ballads with masterful rock to become one of the biggest bands in the world.
Parachutes, the 2000 debut album from the London quartet, was “dreamy, regretful pop with melodies that dog you like a missed opportunity” (Entertainment Weekly). This release contained the anthem “Yellow” and earned the band their first Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album.
The band’s follow up release, 2002’s A Rush of Blood to the Head, earned them even more Grammy recognition — including another Best Alternative Music Album award, a Record Of The Year award for “Clocks” and a Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal award for “In My Place.” Rolling Stone called this release “a nervier, edgier, thoroughly surprising album.”
Critics and fans were in for another surprise with 2005’s X&Y, which Blender called a “masterpiece.” Spin wrote: “By ratcheting up their guitars and still singing about everyday themes, Coldplay are recasting their nerdy-student Britpop as Important Rock Music without sacrificing the homespun vibe that allowed Martin’s fans to believe that he wrote a song for each one of them and called it ‘Yellow’.”
