CARL PAPAI | 1925-2010
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH: Carl Papai Carl Papai The creator of In the Know, the central Ohio high-school quiz show, is being remembered as a man with a passion for learning and for encouraging young people to learn.

Carl Papai of Upper Arlington died at age 85 after having suffered a stroke several weeks ago.

"He was one of those guys who knew a lot about a lot," said Bill Schiffman, moderator of In the Know. "He had a very facile and fertile mind, and, even as he got into his 80s, he was exploring stuff."

Until recently, Papai was the "judge" and a question writer for the show, which he created in 1966.

"Carl wrote the art questions, most of the music questions and the 'big bonus' questions right up to the time he died," Schiffman said. In the Know originally aired as a live production on WBNS-TV (Channel 10) before moving in 1982 to WOSU, where it is taped.
