Infant & Toddler Modules
Ohio's Ready to Learn Early is a state-funded program targeted to home-based care providers. Overview modules are 2.5-hours in length. Modules 2 - 7 are 3-hours in length. Modules are provided by the Ohio Educational Television Stations through a grant from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Workshops are free and approved for Step Up To Quality and IACET CEU Credit. ODJFS in-service forms will be provided to each participant. For specific information about modules, call (614) 292-9678 and ask for the Ready to Learn Coordinator.
Module 1: Overview Explore the Infant Toddler Guidelines and its role in the lives of infants, toddlers, providers and parents! By exploring the Guidelines, participants will deepen their understanding of how children learn. The six developmental domains of young children will be reviewed and the impact that routine care has on all developmental domains will be discussed.
Module 2: Physical Health In order for optimal infant and toddler growth and development to occur, caregivers must provide “protective canopies” such as health maintenance and illness prevention. By using the Guidelines, participants will discuss how to help young children achieve optimal physical health while allowing children to explore and connect with the world around them.
Module 3: Emotional Development New research shows how emotions are the key in organizing the experience and behavior of young children. Participants will further deepen their understanding of the emotional development of infants and toddlers and explore how this knowledge can translated into emotionally supportive care giving practices.
IModule 4: Social Development All learning happens in relationships. These interactions contribute to a child’s learning in all developmental areas. Participants will gain a better understanding of how the connection of infants and toddlers to adults and children around them shape their interactions, skills, and abilities. Care giving strategies to support social development will also be shared.
Module 5: Motor Development Through movement, infants and toddlers learn about themselves and their environment. While exploring the Motor Development Domain of the Guidelines, participants will study typical, as well as variations in, small & large motor development and strategies to enhance young children’s motor skills
Module 6: Language Development Infants and toddlers communicate to build relationships, share meaning with one another and express their needs. Acquisition of language is one of the most amazing developmental accomplishments during the first three years of life! Participants will examine the progression of language development and review techniques to support this development in infants and toddlers. Early Literacy development will also be discussed.
Module 7: Cognitive Development Babies are motivated, curious, and competent learners right from the start! Cognitive development, the building of concept knowledge and thinking skills, is utilized by children of all abilities. Participants will examine cognitive development through the discussion of the six discoveries that infants make in their world. Strategies for how this knowledge can be translated into higher quality care giving practices will be provided.
