What is a Digital Media Center?

COSI building, Columbus, OhioG.M. Tom Rieland talks about WOSU@COSI

The digital media center serves as a multimedia studio and community space and includes hands-on digital media and technology activities co-produced with COSI. WOSU is using this development time to connect with and to seek ideas from community leaders and prospective partner organizations as part of a larger plan for development of community programming and services.

Due to the digital transition that enables WOSU television and radio to split their digital channels into multiple channels of programming delivery, we now have an opportunity to expand local programs without displacing fine national programming that garners strong audience interest.

The pipeline of possibilities is larger than ever, and WOSU has a unique opportunity to use this new digital firepower in the public interest, as part of its mission.

WOSU has access to all the media required to bring a variety of audiences to any given topic of interest to the community. Think about our documentary, Many Happy Returns to Lazarus, which was not only a popular television program, but was repurposed into a series of radio and talk programs and a Web site rich with on-demand video, audio and images. The documentary premiere event gathered the community to reminisce about the loss of a local institution, but more importantly, Many Happy Returns brought to the foreground of community discussion the demise of that local institution and the opportunities and challenges presented by the suburbanization of the shopping experience in Central Ohio—an issue that speaks ultimately to the economic health of downtown Columbus. You can expect more of the same from WOSU and WOSU@COSI!
