WOSU.TV Awards
A number of outstanding programs and documentaries written, directed, produced, and/or edited by WOSU television have been recognized over the past 50 years. The Station has received over 40 regional Emmy® Awards from the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences honoring a variety of subjects including script writing, editing, cinematography, lighting, entertainment, and reporting. In 2001, WOSU.TV received a regional Emmy® Award for Thomas Jefferson & Sally Hemings: A Family Conversation, which offered a straightforward, high—spirited dialogue about family history, race relations, and America’s response to the controversy surrounding the relationship between Jefferson and Hemings. Many Jefferson and Hemings family members participated in the program along with Tina Andrews, screenwriter and co–producer of Sally Hemings: An American Scandal.
The Columbus International Film and Video Festival has also awarded WOSU television with numerous Chris Awards. In 1996, Voices from the Village was honored—a groundbreaking series that presented an unprecedented gathering of the most highly regarded African-American social reformists, psychologists, theologians, journalists and historians. Other WOSU television programs that have been honored with Chris Awards include Jazzvoices: A Special Evening, The Man Who Had Everything, and Echoes Across the Oval.
Another noteworthy documentary that has won numerous awards is The Birth of Ohio Stadium. Narrated by Tony Award-winning actor Philip Bosco, the film focuses on the eight men responsible for designing and building the stadium. Rare photos, historical film footage, and extensive interviews tell a story about victorious triumph and a dream that still stands today.
